5 Tips to Make Real Change in the New Year

The five most important things to do to make some real change in the New Year- Written by Mike Boyle, who is a world-renowned Strength & Conditioning coach to professional athletes and new fitness seekers alike.

#1- Show up!

One of my favorite books is Jeff Olson’s The Slight Edge. Olson’s 1st principle is SHOW UP. If you want to make a change you have to show up. Is January 1st the ideal time? Probably not, who cares, let’s go. Whatever today is, it’s the right day get your first workout of 2021 in. Who cares if it’s a 10 minute walk. The cliches are endless but, “the journey of 1000 miles” does really start with one step.

#2- Consistency is Key.

Olson’s 2nd principle is to show up consistently. Set a goal to do something every day! That way if you fail, you work out three times a week! Don't strive to work hard, strive to be consistent.

#3- Change Your Diet (but, just a little).

My favorite nutrition system is John Berardi’s Precision Nutrition. You want to know why? Because the system is not a “don't eat this” system, it’s a system of behavior change. Pick one change that you think will make a big difference. Maybe it’s just committing to having a protein source at every meal. Maybe it’s swearing off donuts.

#4- Strength train.

Your body will thank you. There are now literally 100’s of app-based home programs if you don't want to join a gym. Pick one that is smart and safe. The key is don't just do cardio. If you want real change, total body strength training is key. Yes, total body. Don't say stuff like, “I don't need to do legs, I run”. TOTAL BODY.

#5- Make it Public.

Why make your changes public? Because we need a support system. Enlist your friends as your support network! Change is easy, but hard. Just start and don't beat yourself up if you miss a day. Just get started again. They say it takes 21 days to build a habit. Think 3 walks and 2 lifts a week for the next 21 days.
